A student should look into the different fields of engineering that exist and the job descriptions for each type to determine the field in which to study. Some of these fields consist of chemical, civil, electrical, industrial, mechanical, environmental and IT engineering and most engineers will specialize in one of these fields.
Along with high GPA scores, a student must also perform well in the SATs and other exams. You should look for and apply to schools with strong engineering programs in their area of appeal. A bachelor’s of science (BS) degree is basically the groundwork of an engineering education followed by a Master’s (MS) and doctorate (PhD) degree. You could also join a professional association or society that accommodates your specific interest.
As different people are suited to different jobs, you will want to make sure that your temperament and personality fit this career. Engineers should be creative, inquisitive, analytical, detail oriented and should communicate well both orally and in writing.
As it can be a highly competitive field, you should begin to narrow down career choices and look for accredited college programs that you can afford and that have excellent job placement statistics.
Accreditation Board for Engineer-ing and Technology (ABET)
ABET authorizes college and university programs in engineering and technology. Accreditation is founded on a program’s faculty, curriculum and facilities, program improvements and the institutional promise to specific beliefs of quality and ethics.
In addition to the standard degree, some schools have agreements with 2-year colleges in which the college provides the initial engineering education and the school automatically admits students for their last two years.
Those who are licensed are called professional engineers (PEs). This license typically requires a degree from an ABET-accredited program, four years of relevant work experience and completion of a state examination.
Recent graduates can start the licensing process by taking the examination in two stages. The initial stage, the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam, allows the student to take the exam upon graduation. It is designed for students who are close to finishing an undergraduate engineering degree. Engineers who pass this exam are called engineers in training (EITs) or interns (EIs). After they acquire suitable work experience, EITs can take the second exam, called the Principles and Practice exam.
